NOSE CORRECTION

There are few other procedures in Plastic Surgery where form and function are as closely related as in technically very demanding nose corrections.

The nose is the central visualization point in the human face and immediately catches the eye even at a cursory glance, especially in profile. A form disorder can quickly lead to severe psychological stress for those affected. A symptom that is often complained about is obstructed nasal breathing, for example during sports or at night, caused by a deflection of the nasal septum or chronic swelling of the inner nasal conchae.

A nose correction, the so-called rhinoplasty, can therefore be carried out for both aesthetic and functional reasons - usually it is a combination of both. Therefore, our credo for nose corrections is "form and function in harmony". For this reason, we always carry out the rhinoplasties together with our cooperation partner Dr. Kai Morgenstern, an experienced senior physician and ENT specialist with the additional qualification in facial plastic surgery and well over 1500 successful nose operations.

Thus, the combination of specialties creates a high level of professional synergy in the surgical correction of the nose with the highest degree of precision, safety and aesthetic harmony. This interdisciplinary approach is unique in Berlin and benefits our patients.

The technical possibilities of rhinoplasty are diverse and range from removing a nasal hump to narrowing or straightening the nose to refining the tip of the nose. In the case of larger nasal deformities, structural nasal shortening or lengthening can also be carried out to improve nasal breathing.

Preparation

Before each procedure, a detailed and comprehensible facial analysis with photo documentation is performed together with Dr. Morgenstern, on the basis of which the individual plan for the nose surgery is then determined. Before the procedure, you should not take any blood thinning medication for at least 14 days and you should abstain from nicotine. There are also a few contraindications, which we will discuss honestly and in detail during the personal meeting.

Technique

The procedure itself is performed under general anesthesia, so that it is absolutely painless for you. As a rule, the necessary changes to the nasal bone and cartilage structure are carried out via invisible incisions inside the nose (so-called closed rhinoplasty). In most cases, this involves the removal or relocation of bone and cartilage. In the case of extensive changes in the nose - especially in the area of the tip of the nose - direct access is also chosen. For this purpose, a fine, later almost invisible incision is chosen on the bridge of the nose. This procedure is called open rhinoplasty. Occasionally, tiny additional incisions have to be made in the area of the inner corner of the eye for precise guidance of the bone correction. In addition to the pure shape correction, the nasal septum can be straightened and the nasal conchae reduced in size to improve nasal breathing. Necessary cartilage transplants, eg for modeling and stabilizing the tip of the nose, are primarily obtained from the nasal septum. Cartilage from other parts of the body such as the ear is needed less frequently. The operation itself takes about 90-120 minutes. Silicone splints are inserted while the patient is still under anaesthetic, and a splint is put on from the outside for protection.

Costs & Financing

The costs of a nose correction are made up of the surgical procedure, material, anesthesia and final examinations. You will receive an exact invoice according to GOÄ (doctors' fee schedule), the approximate costs start at 4,500 euros, depending on the effort and combinations with other procedures. Financing via one of our financing partners is possible without any problems, just contact us.

Risks

In the hands of experienced surgeons, surgical nose corrections are an established and safe procedure with a great effect on the contours of the face and harmonize the form and function of the nose. As with all operations, complications such as bleeding, bruising, scarring or wound healing disorders can rarely occur.

Postoperative pain can be treated well with painkillers, so that the inserted tamponades can be tolerated comfortably. The nasal swelling and bruising almost always go away on their own within a few days. Sometimes a residual swelling remains for about 8-12 weeks, so that the final shape of the nose can only be assessed after about six months.

Aftercare

As already mentioned, the operation time is around 90-120 minutes. In concrete terms, this means that after around 4-6 hours (after a final check-up by  one of the surgeons) you can go home again. You will also receive the emergency number of the surgeon just in case. It is important to cool your nose moderately for one or two days at home to reduce the swelling. On the day of the operation itself, we recommend restricted bed rest with an elevated head. Two days later, there will be a check-up appointment at our practice. You have to refrain from sport or physical exertion for four weeks in order to keep your blood pressure low and reduce the risk of bleeding. The inner and outer splints should be worn for one to two weeks depending on the surgical procedure. Usually you are fully socially acceptable after a week. Possibe sutures on the bridge of the nose are removed after 10-12 days. In the course of the first six months we will see you regularly for follow-up checks.

Are there reasonable alternatives to surgery?

A complex nose correction operation under anesthesia is not necessary in every case. In the case of smaller humps or a bridge of the nose that is too low, volume can also be built up with an injection treatment with hyaluronic acid and thus balanced with an optical trick to harmonize it. The successes of these "minimally invasive" treatments are often times very impressive and can also be understood as a simulating intermediate step before a final surgical correction. We would be happy to advise you on this during our office hours.
